In 1969 David Nickson started work for one of the first industrial and office cleaning companies in the U.K, when the idea of 'contracting out' was quite a new concept, prior to this all cleaning work was carried out in-house by direct labour and generally ad-hoc. During this time, 1960's industry in general, and Merseyside in particular enjoyed a boom period, a shortage of labour in industry meant that employers concentrated their workforce on manufacturing.
